Video on the “Wakobo Ti Kodro” project
Improving the care of high-risk pregnancies
in the Central African Republic

On the occasion of the International Day of the Midwife on May 5th, the international medical NGO ALIMA (The Alliance for International Medical Action), in partnership with the GHiGS team, shared a video on the research project “Wakobo Ti Kodro,” which aims to improve the management of high-risk pregnancies in the Central African Republic.

The Central African Republic is among the countries with the highest maternal mortality rates.

The “Wakobo Ti Kodro” project aims to increase the proportion of deliveries for pregnant women at risk of obstetric complications in health facilities and thus reduce the number of maternal deaths.

It is currently being implemented in Bangui and its outskirts in the Central African Republic, with the aim of being expanded nationally and positioning the Central African Republic as a pilot country that can serve as an example to other regions on the continent and around the world.

The project combines the training of midwives (“Wakobo ti Kodro” or Village Midwife in the Sango language) with the identification and follow-up of high-risk pregnancies and their integration into the healthcare system.

The action of midwives is truly at the heart of the study because their traditional knowledge enables them to provide physical and emotional support during childbirth. Through their knowledge gained from delivering thousands of babies, combined with the support of modern medicine provided by project teams, midwives will be able to provide crucial assistance to women in labor.

The short film below shows how, thanks to an innovative digital application installed on a tablet, a midwife can monitor pregnancies in the community. The application was developed with the PACCI program of Côte d’Ivoire as part of the PRISME-CI platform.
