Workshop AI & Health : « Rethinking medicine at the human-machine frontier »

The Bordeaux Population Health Research Center in collaboration with MIT Critical Data, PLOS Digital Health and Bordeaux University Hospital, are organising a multidisciplinary workshop on AI and health on Saturday 13 December 2025 at ISPED: ‘Rethinking medicine at the human-machine frontier’

How is artificial intelligence redefining what it means to diagnose, treat and care for patients? Can we trust it to make fair and ethical decisions about our health?
So many questions that will be discussed during the workshop ‘AI and Health: Rethinking Medicine at the Human-Machine Frontier’ organised by Ariel Guerra Adames, PhD student at BPH, in collaboration with MIT Critical Data, PLOS Digital Health and Bordeaux University Hospital.
Ariel is an engineer and PhD student in Public Health, specialising in informatics and health. He is currently working on his thesis within the AHeaD and SISTM teams, conducting research on the use of language models and AI to study bias in medical decision-making, particularly in emergency situations. In 2025, he won the award for best communication for his presentation at the ‘Machine Learning for Health’ conference in Vancouver.
His work is contributing to improving equity and reducing bias in medicine.
The day will begin with a opening speech by Leo A. Celi entitled ‘Teaching Machines to Doubt’, followed by an expert panel discussion on ‘Bias, ethics and responsibility in healthcare’. It will conclude with an interactive session on bias in language models and medical AI.
The aim of this meeting is to highlight the importance of interdisciplinarity by bringing together clinicians, computer scientists and social scientists to explore the future of healthcare in the era of intelligent systems:
- Leo Anthony Celi, Principal Research Scientist at MIT Laboratory for Computational Physiology, Physician at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (Harvard Medical School), and co-creator of the MIMIC database (Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care) – one of the pioneers of health data repositories in critical care and emergency medicine
- Yamina Meziani, Associate professor in sociology and Diversity, equality and inclusion officer of the University of Bordeaux
- Victoria Bourgeais, Associate professor in computer science, specialist in explainable AI for health at the LaBRI
- Andy Smith, Research Director at Sciences Po Bordeaux, author of “AI and Health: The Age of Possibilities”
- Vianney Jouhet, Head of the Health Data Repository at Bordeaux University Hospital
- Charles Veillette, Clinical Teaching Associate at the Department of Innovation in Medical Education, Université Laval
And many more.
This event is being organised as a parallel event to a similar day that will take place on 9 December in Paris, at the Hôtel-Dieu Hospital (AP-HP).
