Maude Wagner PhD student at the BPH Inserm Research Center-University of Bordeaux is one of 35 laureats of the French L’Oréal-UNESCO “For Women in Science” 2019 Award (For Women In Science FWIS).

Science has always had a essential place for L’Oreal’s activities. The firm is also world champion for gender equality and believes that women are able to make an immense contribution to the development of science. Unfortunately, they are not well enough represented at all levels. The L’Oréal Foundation and UNESCO join forces in this fight for an inclusive science and award “For Women in Science” scholarships.


This year, the jury of the competition composed of eminent members of the scientific community and the Academy of Sciences was chaired by Prof. Laure Saint-Raymond, mathematician member of the Academy of Sciences and professor at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon . Among the initial 820 applications, the jury selected 35 projects for the quality and variety of the themes addressed as well as the originality of the points of view and methods used. The selected work concerns themes also important for L’Oréal Foundation and UNESCO’s concerns, as well as the challenges in a context of sustainable development.

The official award ceremony was held on October 8, 2019, in the Grand Amphitheater of the Museum of Natural History in Paris, a magisterial place with a scientific past classified as a historical monument. During the ceremony inaugurated by Alexandra Palt, Director General of the L’Oréal Foundation, Maude Wagner received her Prize in the presence of Yves Saint Geours, President of the French National Commission of UNESCO and Jean-Paul Agon, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of L’Oréal France.

In addition to the prestigious prize and a scholarship of € 15,000 that she will use in the development of her future research, Maude Wagner was able to benefit from training courses related to leadership and the enhancement of science during the two days preceding ceremony. Moreover, she now joins the very tight network of UNESCO’s privileged partners and will be the permanent guest of the events organized by the institution.

Trained at the University of Bordeaux, Bachelor of Applied Mathematics in Social Sciences and Master of Public Health at ISPED, Maude Wagner is now in her third year of doctorate in Public Health at the BPH Inserm Research Center – University of Bordeaux. She conducts her research under the co-direction of biostatistician researcher Cécile Proust-Lima from the Biostatistics team and epidemiology researcher Cécilia Samieri from LEHA team (Lifelong exposures health and aging). His thesis focuses on modeling pathways of modifiable factors related to lifestyle  (eg eating habits, physical activity) and cardiometabolic health (eg obesity, hypertension, diabetes) during the preclinical / prodromal phase for Alzheimer’s disease, to identify key windows of intervention. For this purpose, she applies adapted and innovative statistical models to French cohort datas (l’étude des Trois Cités) and American cohorts datas (the Nurses’ Health Study).
