Cerebral small vessel disease : Ilana Caro’s promising publication

Retour

Ilana Caro, a postdoctoral researcher in the ELEANOR-BPH team,
is behind a promising new study onoccult cerebral small vessel disease.
Her work highlights new waysto understand and prevent this disease,
which affects nearly 4 million ageing people in France

Since her thesis under the supervision of Professor Stéphanie Debette as part of the RHU SHIVA programme, for which she received a doctoral grant from the DPH (Investments for the Future Programme), Ilana Caro has been pursuing an ambitious goal, to find biological markers to improve the diagnosis and understanding of cerebral small vessel disease.

This disease, which affects around 4 to 5 million people over the age of 60, is still largely misunderstood.
It is characterised by ‘occult’ lesions in the small blood vessels irrigating the brain, which can affect their structure and functioning.
These alterations, visible on MRI scans, can lead to risks of stroke, dementia and various cognitive disorders.

In a study recently published in Nature Aging, Ilana Caro and her team show positive results for identifying a molecular fingerprint of the disease.
This advance opens up new perspectives for more reliable and early diagnosis, better follow-up of disease progression, and targeted treatments.

This study was made possible thanks to close collaboration between the BPH, the VBHI, and the SHiVA research programme, which funds Ilana’s work. Within these structures, many of our researchers share their projects and expertise.

Together, they advance public health to better understand, prevent, and care for patients.
