Retour

The PH-LEAD Public Health Leadership training program is an interdisciplinary, professional course designed for doctoral students and early-career researchers seeking to develop leadership skills to become future leaders capable of addressing emerging public health challenges

PH-LEAD, for Foundations of leadership for early-career researchers in public health, is a 2-day intensive training module taught in English and designed for PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and early-career scientists. It will be held on April 27th-28th at the Bordeaux school of public health (Isped), University of Bordeaux.

Funded by the Digital Public Health Graduate Program, this training builds on an interdisciplinary approach to address emerging challenges related to leadership in public health. It is led by the Bordeaux Population Health research center U1219 and the Isped in collaboration with the Department of public health of the University of Bordeaux.

It counts for the compulsory training of the Doctoral School of Society, Politics and Public Health (EDSP2) of the University of Bordeaux. It is also offered to the French network of PhD students in public health.

The module is organized by Geneviève Chêne, Professor of medicine in public health at the University of Bordeaux and Bordeaux University Hospital and former Director of Isped, and Ilaria Montagni, Inserm Researcher at the Bordeaux Population Health research center U1219.

The PH-LEAD module builds upon a previous initiative held in 2023: the WHO-Isped European Public Health Leadership Course, which was also supported by the Digital Public Health Graduate Program.

A professional, international and interdisciplinary training program

The field of public health has highlighted the importance of training new leaders and providing them with the tools needed to better prevent and manage future crises. This includes developing key competencies such as compliance with ethical and regulatory standards, effective communication, reflective and collaborative decision-making and actions, and engagement in systemic change.

This module rises awareness of leadership foundations which can be directly applied in real-world contexts.

Instructors:

  • Kasia Czabanowska, CAPHRI, Maastricht University, Netherlands
  • Janet De Souza-Hart, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences, Boston, USA
  • Minh Huyen Ton Nu Nguyet, Bordeaux Population Health research center U1219, University of Bordeaux, Inserm, IRD, France
  • Odessa Petit-dit-Dariel, EHESP School of public health, Rennes, France
  • Mili Spahic, Isped, University of Bordeaux, France
  • Ave Voit, University of Tartu, Estonia

The programme includes a masterclass that explores transformational leadership approaches and invites participants to reflect on their own leadership style as researchers. It also addresses leading change with evidence, examining how public health leaders translate research into policy and societal impact.

Participants will develop clear and convincing communication skills to engage policymakers, practitioners, and diverse audiences, through the application of the Public health leadership competency framework intended to move research beyond academia.

The module also explores sustainable leadership by focusing on how to build resilience, avoid toxic leadership patterns, and develop healthy and collaborative leadership practices for long-term careers.
