Preventing cognitive decline and dementia: reflections from an epidemiological perspective
Abstract
The amyloid cascade hypothesis has dominated research on Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Despite considerable financial and research investment all drug trials to date have failed.
This highlights the need for prevention; for effective prevention a better understanding of how risk and protective factors shape cognitive trajectories over the lifecourse is required.
The objective of my presentation is to take this long view, and demonstrate the value of the epidemiological perspective for research on cognitive decline and dementia.
